During our Summer of Nuts, we were able to bring Mockernut into rescue. Once he settled in & his foster mom got to know him, we confidently felt he is a classic Mini Schnauzer! He loves his chew toys, playing in the house & in the yard, & naps like a champion.
We've already mentioned that Mocker is a typical Mini Schnauzer, we are going to seek a family that does not have or plan to have small children. He will do fine with children who are older & understand what play is appropriate.
Mocker missed the younger puppy age where he would have been learning things like walking on a leash. Boy, does it show. Right now, his only response to a leash is to thrash & alligator roll. Therefore, we will be requiring a secure physical fence. This will give his family time to settle him in & do leash training further down the road.
This guy does not appreciate being left alone at all. And especially long periods of time. We would like to see his family have a schedule that will allow them to spend a lot of time with him. An alternative would be a canine friend, or two, of similar size to hang out with him during the day.
Mockernut doesn't tear up things in the home, he is content to play with the toys provided to him. When his foster mom is gone, she sets him up in a puppy proof area of the home. Crate training is not on the current list of things to learn; he is not at all comfortable in a crate. Trying to crate train him too soon may cause further fear & that is something we are just not going to do to him.
Potty training is going well; he is receptive to going outside & doing his business in a secure area of the yard. His foster mom is keeping some belly bands on hand for additional training. These are a good tool to use so that corrective action can be taken without sudden movements or chaos. Understand that with a change in environment & schedules, there may be a learning curve. Please plan accordingly & set Mocker up for success.
At night, Mockernut sleeps in the bed with his foster family. He goes down & has sweet dreams all night long. He gets his best rest when he is able to peacefully sleep with others, tucked in & safe. First thing the next morning, he goes outside for a potty & gets a treat for being a good boy.
Mockernut just might be the new friend you have been looking for!
