INSTRUCTIONS for ADOPTION:
Chance became a Gateway 4 Paws Alumni in the fall of 2023, when he was just a puppy. He had an underbite, so the breeder surrendered him to rescue. He was adopted before the holidays & went home with a family & Cavalier siblings. This summer we were contacted by the family, who let us know they were no longer able to care for their dogs properly. We were quick to bring Chance back into rescue & get him with his original foster family to help lessen the shock of losing the world he had known for almost 2 years.
Chance took a few days to decompress & then he settled back into a routine, this time as a teenager instead of a puppy. His foster mom remembers his personality so well. He has always been introverted; he isn't a fan of chaos or crazy situations. He likes calm & relaxation...... except when he is outside! Then he is a detective. He likes to run the fence line and chalk up a long list of "I spy" characters.
He is shy, but curious. He likes to have the opportunity to investigate before he commits to an activity, or person, lol. Chance is motivated by praise & love. He is not clingy but enjoys following his foster mom around to manage her tasks. He stays in a dog friendly area of the home with his Cavalier foster sister when the humans aren't home. He is very good to not get into things he shouldn't. While they are gone, he watches TV, sleeps, & looks out the window. Chance also likes toys. He particularly likes a ball that makes weird alien noises when it rolls. He will play & play all by himself with or without an audience.
Chance is good with house breaking once you have a routine in place. He is praise & treat motivated, so that is helpful with positive reinforcement. His foster mom said he has not tried to mark in the home. Remember, in a new home, a new environment means that new habits will have to be established. Please be prepared to set him up for success by getting a schedule in place. Always praise him when he meets your expectations.
Chance does well with a secure harness & leash. He startles easily, so we definitely recommend training & bonding before you go out into an unfamiliar area. Chance will do his potty business on a harness, but he sure loves to run around in a fenced yard. It is where he is able to use his brain & get good stimulation a few times a day. We are willing to discuss adoption if you don't have a physically fenced yard, we will take this on a case-by-case basis. Do know, we absolutely will NOT allow shock collars or invisible fences.
Chance is fantastic with other dogs of similar size. Chance is low-key playful, for very short spurts of time. He isn't going to be the dog that joins in with little kids to play in the yard. He is going to do better with a slower paced home life. He absolutely loves car rides & will ride perfectly for a road trip. If you have another Cavalier, or similar personality type dog in the home, Chance would like that. He has always had other canine friends around.
Unfortunate circumstances brought Chance back to us, but the beauty of rescue made sure he wasn't alone or in danger. For that we are so very grateful. We approach the next chapter with renewed fire & resolve to find his family!
